With the Internet it all started way back in January 1999 before the web really took off it was then when I first registered a web domain  www.marshmotors.co.uk  for a car showroom that I had in Salisbury. 
In those days the Internet was very slow with no broadband and to connect cost 50 pence a minute to log onto a server in Reading.
With a website we needed content and information so to add photos we used a video recorder on a tripod and software to capture stills to add low-resolution pictures to our website and to produce coloured brochures as hand outs, digital cameras were only just coming onto the market, our first camera was a VGA Fujifilm DX-9 zoom 0.3 mega pixel, Although the spec is pathetic by today's standards, it was very good at that time - 640 x 480 resolution, 3x optical zoom (32-96mm), auto focus, built in flash, rechargeable Li-ion battery, 2" LCD screen and used Smart Media cards. From memory it cost around £480.

​Our first desktop PC cost around £1700 which interestingly had a tiny 256mb of ram immediately upgraded to a whopping 512mb.
Paper advertising was stopped in 1999 and we concentrated on the internet as the only way to sell our stock, selling to France, Southern Ireland and Scotland.
Around the end of 2000 with the Internet getting more popular and now connecting was just a penny a minute to get online selling from the net took off I remember selling 4 cars to the London area in just one week.
Things have now moved on and I have since retired from the garage trade and now my wife of 49 years has given me a job as painter and decorator hopefully this will only be temporary as I much prefer to be building web sites for my self and local people.
If you are in business offering a service or selling something you need a website, take a look at the stats below the one on the left is without any advertising at all but the one on the right did get extra traffic from items on sell through Ebay, interesting. ​
